FAQs

Have a question for our team? We can help! Check out our FAQs below or contact us for assistance.

What styles of martial arts do you offer?

We currently offer programs in Taekwondo, Hapkido, Muay Thai Kickboxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

How often is belt testing?

Belt testing is every two months, and may be for a full belt color or a stripe. It’s important to note that progress is very individual. We will assess your progress and determine when you're ready to test for the next belt or stripe.

Why does my child need to do belt testing?

We encourage regular belt testing for several reasons: it builds discipline and confidence, sets goals and provides regular feedback, and also teaches self control and performance under pressure. It’s also a great way to celebrate your achievements and share in the journey with your fellow students! If your child feels overwhelmed or discouraged by testing, talk to us. We can provide support and address any concerns. Ultimately, belt testing is a valuable tool to enhance student's learning and development in karate.

How long does it typically take to move up in rank?

The average time we see is 4-6 months, but typically takes closer to 6 months. It depends on several factors, such as how often you attend class and dedication to practice outside of the studio. As a general rule of thumb, beginners progress faster as they learn the fundamental techniques. Advancement slows down at higher levels as the skills become more complex. Ultimately, we will assess your readiness to test for the next belt based on your skill level, mastery of the techniques, and overall understanding and confidence.

Why is it required for martial arts students to go to tournaments?

We believe it’s important for students to have real-world experience in what they learn in our classes. Facing an opponent with the same goal builds tenacity and drive.

Tournaments require quick thinking and adaptability to different opponents' styles. Our students learn to strategize, adjust their techniques, and to react effectively in dynamic situations, building on what they learn with other students in class.

Tournaments also emphasize respect for opponents and officials. Students learn proper etiquette, sportsmanship, and how to win or lose gracefully.

Do you offer classes for kids/ adults/ beginners/ experienced students?

We cater to all experience levels and ages 3+! We offer programs that are designed for specific age groups and experience levels to ensure that the experience is tailored to individual needs. What safety precautions do you take in your classes?

Safety is Job 0 at GFTC. Our student's safety is our top priority. Here's how we ensure a safe and positive learning environment:

  • Experienced Instructors: A certified instructor is always present on the training floor, providing guidance and supervision throughout the class. Our classes emphasize proper technique over raw power or speed. This helps minimize the risk of injury and ensures students develop a strong foundation.

  • Training Space: We limit the number of students to ensure ample space for everyone to move freely and practice safely.

  • Gradual Progression: Every class starts with warm-up and stretching activities, helping to prevent injuries and prepare students for physical activity. Before sparring, students learn and practice fundamental techniques through controlled drills, building confidence and skill before moving on to more advanced training.

  • Top-Notch Safety Gear: We provide the highest quality protective equipment for all students, ensuring they're well-guarded during drills and sparring sessions. Even during drilling exercises, students will wear appropriate gear when working with partners.

  • Close Supervision: Sparring is never done unsupervised. An instructor is always present to monitor and guide students, ensuring a safe and controlled environment.

  • Studio Hygiene: The training mats are thoroughly cleaned 2-3 times a day to minimize the risk of infection. Additionally, restrooms are disinfected daily to promote a clean and healthy training environment.

  • Age-Specific Training: Classes are designed for specific age groups and experience levels. This allows students to train with peers of similar size and skill, fostering a more enjoyable and productive learning experience while minimizing the risk of injury.

By prioritizing safety and focusing on proper technique, we create a fun and rewarding learning environment where our students build confidence, develop skills, and achieve their full potential in a safe and supportive setting.

Do you require students to wear protective gear? Is protective gear provided?

At GTFC we prioritize safe sparring practices for all. We offer a wide selection of high-quality sparring gear to ensure a safe learning environment. To promote responsible training, sparring gear is typically recommended for students who have reached yellow belt level or higher. This allows them to safely practice and master the techniques learned in class during live sparring sessions. We're happy to discuss your child's individual needs and recommend the best gear options.

Can parents watch their children participate in classes?

Absolutely, we encourage it but do not allow side coaching - certified instructors will provide coaching. Often parents with the best intentions give kids advice and add pressure by mistake. The best thing to say to your child in or during class is how much you love watching them learn.
